Our Mayfield Jacob Sheep Flock
We are based on the Staffordshire/Derbyshire border & have a Jacob Sheep Society registered flock of two-horned traditional rare breed Jacob Sheep (Mayfield Flock 04351). Recently we downsized to 11 Breeding Ewes & 2 Rams.
The flock began in 2004 when we wanted to replace a small beef suckler herd with something that would be easy to manage & attractive for holiday cottage visitors to look at in the fields. Jacobs with their distinctive brown & white spotted fleece patterns & curly horns seemed perfect. They were also fairly hardy, experienced very few problems when lambing & were good mothers. The ‘boys’ make excellent lean, tender & tasty meat (Hoggett), (quite different from ordinary shop bought lamb0 and Jacob mutton, with its large joints & dice has also proved to be very popular.
